The Cultural Revolution in China was a political movement launched by Mao Zedong, the leader of the Communist Party of China, in 1966. It lasted for 10 years, until Mao's death in 1976.

The main goal of the Cultural Revolution was to purge capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society and promote Maoist ideology. Mao believed that the Communist Party and the Chinese government had become too bureaucratic and corrupt, and that a revolution was needed to rejuvenate the spirit of the Chinese people.

During the Cultural Revolution, Mao encouraged young people, known as the Red Guards, to attack the "Four Olds": old customs, old culture, old habits, and old ideas. They destroyed historical relics, burned books, and attacked anyone who was seen as a threat to Mao's ideology.

The Cultural Revolution caused widespread chaos and violence throughout China, with millions of people being persecuted, imprisoned, or killed. It also resulted in a significant loss of cultural heritage and knowledge, as well as damage to the economy and society.

After Mao's death in 1976, the Cultural Revolution was officially ended, and many of its leaders were arrested and punished. However, its impact on Chinese society and culture continues to be felt today.
